Description: From a session at a meeting of the Society of Actuaries held in San Diego, CA, June 22-23, 2000 This session provides a brief overview of futurism techniques which can be employed in the strategic planning process, such as environmental scans or Delphi studies. A case study approach is used to provide attendees with a hands-on learning process.

Description: Techniques that have gained some traction in general (property/casualty) insurance will be highlighted with a particular focus on the linear mixed model. This model adds random effects to the more commonly seen fixed effects (for example, as used in GLMs).

Description: This presentation, session number 44PD, took place at the 2000 Annual Meeting of the Society of Actuaries, held October 15-18 in Chicago. “This session identifies meaningful, evolving dramatic insights arising from the studies and techniques of futurism. It shows how such insights are measured and affected by each other and existing dynamics through the use of actuarial models and related tools.” The presentation notes that “future studies basically takes over when the assumption of continuity in models is a weak assumption or in which there is some reason to believe that one might not be able to use the same model throughout the whole forecasting period.” Discussion from participants is included. Description: This session will explore the practical aspects of bringing models to production, maintenance and management through its entire lifespan. Topics covered will include: production considerations, versioning, documentation, peer review and monitoring the model over its lifespan.

Description: This session will review limited fluctuation credibility, and how to apply that approach to a GLM. Alternative credibility approaches through the lens of ASOP 25 will also be discussed.
